چکیده
The Stokes drift argument put forth by Coy et al. (1986) to explain the monthly mean downward vertical velocities observed in the summer polar mesosphere by radars is critically re-exanfined. The size of the effect is quite sensitive to the choice of gravity wave wavenumber and phase speed. We reproduce the Coy et al. (1986) result for a monochromatic gravity wave and then generalize to a Garrett-Munk type spectrum. This allows us to easily incorporate experimentally determined wave field parameters in order to predict a Stokes drift magnitude. The Stokes drift we calculate for mesospheric spectra reported in the literature is less than 4 cm/s. This is nearly a factor of 10 smaller than the mean June and July downward vertical velocities we have verified from 4-year averaging of the Poker Flat, Alaska, radar data base. In this extended analysis we also find that the upward winter mean vertical velocity is smaller than previously reported but still in apparent conflict with the mesospheric winter circulation theory. We suggest, as an alternative to the Stokes drift idea, that the observed sununer velocity might be the terminal velocity of charged aerosols. Such an explanation would have the advantage of relating the mean velocity observations to the large VHF radar cross section exhibited by the polar sununer mesosphere. This possible connection is discussed further in a companion paper.

Intra‐ and inter‐hemispheric coupling effects on the polar summer mesosphere
[1] The state of the mesosphere is connected to the lower atmosphere through various dynamical coupling processes. Nine years of Odin satellite observations of noctilucent clouds (NLC) have been analyzed as tracers for such processes. Inter‐hemispheric coupling from the winter stratosphere and troposphere is confirmed to have a major influence on the summer mesosphere. Intra‐hemispheric couplin...
متن کاملThe thermal and dynamical state of the atmosphere during polar mesosphere winter echoes
In January 2005, a total of 18 rockets were launched from the Andøya Rocket Range in Northern Norway (69 N) into strong VHF radar echoes called “Polar Mesosphere Winter Echoes” (PMWE). The echoes were observed in the lower and middle mesosphere during large solar proton fluxes. In general, PMWE occur much more seldom compared to their summer counterparts PMSE (typical occurrence rates at 69 N a...
متن کاملDiagnosing radio plasma heating in the polar summer mesosphere using cross modulation: Theory and observations
[1] Radio heating of the free electrons in the mesosphere is an important diagnostic technique for the phenomenon of polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE). Due to a lack of suitable observations, the heating must be modeled when studying its effect on PMSE. In order to try to validate these models, the cross‐modulation technique was implemented at the EISCAT facility near Tromsø, Norway to comp...

The influence of the solar proton event (SPE) 14– 16 July 2000 on Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) is examined. PMSE were observed by the Esrange VHF MST Radar (ESRAD) at 6753 N, 2106 E. The 30 MHz Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies IRIS in Kilpisjärvi (6930 N, 2047 E) registered cosmic radio noise absorption caused by ionisation changes in response to the energetic particle precipit...

High Energy Density Materials (HEDMs) are a new generation of high-energetic materials with high-performance and safety and consist of several different types with different properties. One category of this kind of HEDMs explosives are high energy metal organic frameworks (HE-MOFs) that have more appropriate performance and safety compared to conventional explosives (HEMs) and even other HEDMs....
